Karmas based on the Karmaphala


1. Sanchita Karma: - These are the karmas pertaining to actions that are still to be
enjoyed by the individual. These are like seeds yet to be sprouted.
2. Prarabdha Karma: -These are the operative karmas and are being enjoyed at present inherited from the previous birth. This is nothing but fate or destiny.
3. Aagami karma: -These are the karmas pertaining to actions done in the previous life and in present life which are not likely to fructify in the present and to be carried over to next birth.

Prarabdha karmaphala is further divided into
  • Dridha Karmas: These are karmas that the results are unaltered where destiny will always prevail. These may be good or bad.
  • Adridha Karmas:- these are the karmas where one can exercise his freewill and can be changed / avoided by way of shanties / remedial measures by the individual.
  • Dridha - Adridha karma: This is a Dridha - Adridha karma. The mixed category where it may be difficult whether destiny or freewill (purushardha) prevails and this also up to some extent can be changed /  modified by way of Shantis / propitiation in the appropriate manner. The knowledge of astrology will be used in two and three groups above.

Depending upon human actions karmas are divided into

  • Bodily Actions (Kayakas): These are karmas done by body actions of an individual. It may be good or bad. The karmaphala accruing from this will be enjoyed by the individual.
  • Actions by Speech (Vachakas):  These are karmas performed by an individual by way of speech. This may be good or bad and the outcome will also be enjoyed by the individual.
  • Mental Influences (Manasikas): These are karmas performed by the mental action. This may also be good or bad. The outcome of these influences will also be enjoyed by the individual.

Karmas performed to attain a particular goal in a life

  • Shreyas Karmas: These are actions performed by an individual to reach a goal in life either to attain salvation or otherwise (Nivruthi)
  • Preyas karmas: These are the karmas performed to fulfill the desires of a person in the material world (Samsar/ Pravruthi)
In any birth, the soul attains a body with the objective of performing the duty of Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha.

Karmas by way of its performance
a)     Nithya Karmas: These are regular duties performed like worshipping of God and daily pujas etc.
b)    Nimitta Karmas: These are Havans and Yagnas performed to attain a particular objective.
c)     Kamaya Karmas: These are the actions performed by one individual to attain a desired result. e.g. Putrakamesti Yagna for obtaining children etc. These kamaya karmas are satvik, rajasik and thamasik in nature.
Every human being has to overcome the desires to avoid cycles of birth and rebirths by way of doing good deeds, good actions with an ultimate aim of salvation.
